Close the Dolphin Death Pool at the Mirage in Las Vegas - ForceChange

Close the Dolphin Death Pool at the Mirage in Las Vegas - ForceChange:

'via Blog this' The dolphin habitat at the Mirage in Las Vegas has been rightly named the dolphin death pool due to a 75% fatality rate. These dolphins live in inhumane conditions: the concrete pools are too small, they breathe in fumes, and they are given no protection from the harsh desert climate. Often these conditions cause respiratory infections and diseases that claim their lives prematurely. When a dolphin dies it is quickly replaced, putting yet another innocent life at stake and creating a viscous cycle that will not end until the pool is closed. The Mirage claims that the dolphin pool is educational and used as a research tool, but the cost of being a trainer for a day is $495- $795, this proves that the dolphins are solely being used for profit. No enclosure can compare to the vast freedom of the open sea and keeping them in these small pools is completely heartless. Dolphins are highly intelligent creatures, scientists have determined that their cognitive abilities rank closest to ours. They are self- aware, think about the future and create emotional bonds with each other. Their sentient nature has brought up an important ethical issue that they should be treated humanely. Tragically this is far from the case at the Mirage and for that matter any environment they are held in captivity as mere spectacles for profit. What many don’t realize is that dolphins are often captured from the wild to be put on display as mere commodities. Often this fuels the dolphin slaughter industry like in Tajii, Japan which was exposed by the award winning documentary “The Cove.” Please think about these facts the next time you think of watching a dolphin show or swimming in a dolphin pool. A small pool in Vegas is a horrific place for a dolphin to live surrounded by noise, lights, air pollution and a harsh climate they are offered no protection from. The ever present grin on a dolphins face is often mistaken for their joyfulness, but the only place these highly intelligent animals are truly happy is the boundless sea. Project Free TV - Movies - 2009 - The Cove:

'via Blog this'

'Richard O'Barry' (qv) was the man who captured and trained the dolphins for the television show _"Flipper" (1964)_ (qv). O'Barry's view of cetaceans in captivity changed from that experience when as the last straw he saw that one of the dolphins playing Flipper - her name being Kathy - basically committed suicide in his arms because of the stress of being in captivity. Since that time, he has become one of the leading advocates against cetaceans in captivity and for the preservation of cetaceans in the wild. O'Barry and filmmaker 'Louie Psihoyos' (qv) go about trying to expose one of what they see as the most cruel acts against wild dolphins in the world in Taiji, Japan, where dolphins are routinely corralled, either to be sold alive to aquariums and marine parks, or slaughtered for meat. The primary secluded cove where this activity is taking place is heavily guarded. O'Barry and Psihoyos are well known as enemies by the authorities in Taiji, the authorities who will use whatever tactic to expel the two from Japan forever. O'Barry, Psihoyos and their team covertly try to film as a document of conclusive evidence this cruel behavior. They employ among others Hollywood cameramen and deep sea free divers. They also highlight what is considered the dangerous consumption of dolphin meat (due to its high concentration of mercury) which is often sold not as dolphin meat, and the Japanese government's methodical buying off of poorer third world nations for their support of Japan's whaling industry, that support most specifically at the International Whaling Commission.

Internet Freedom - Innovation Movement:

'via Blog this' The Internet is the greatest engine for social and economic progress the world has ever known. This success comes mainly because the Internet has been largely free from over-bearing government control. As we saw in the United States as millions rose up to oppose the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA), those who try to regulate the Internet against the wishes of its users will face overwhelming resistance and lose legitimacy in the eyes of the public. We implore free people around the globe to make their voices heard, and demand that their governments protect an open and free Internet.

Don’t go to the Olympics in Russia if you don’t want a tooth paste bomb to blow you to bits, and oh, the water is dirty there don’t drink it, blah, blah, blah, blah, The bull shit meter is going off, bleep, bleep, bleep. The USA is still trying to drag Russia into war with the dirty dealings going on in Ukraine, since the Syria plan is not going too well. The news in the toilet paper is just where it belongs, bull shit in the toilet. The war drums are beating louder now, McCain pleading for military intervention in Syria again, and Homeland Security (doesn’t that sound so much like Nazi Germany) and US Intel warning an attack on US soil intensifying. The sky is falling chicken little. War to cover up the collapsing economy. Bring in an even more apparent Totalitarian government. Get your news without propaganda, long live the internet!

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Watch what someone does not what they say they are going to do. Watch the little things. Do they always take the bigger piece of cake? Do they make a heart felt effort at gift giving time? Actions truly do speak louder than words. People will show you who they are or what their real intentions are. They will rationalize and try to explain why they do what they do when their words are a contradiction to their actions, ignore all that, what they actually do is what counts and it speaks volumes about what their true feelings are.

Book Review: “Food Choice and Sustainability: Why Buying Local, Eating Less Meat, and Taking Baby Steps Won’t Work” by Dr. Richard Oppenlander | Our Hen House

Book Review: “Food Choice and Sustainability: Why Buying Local, Eating Less Meat, and Taking Baby Steps Won’t Work” by Dr. Richard Oppenlander | Our Hen House:

'via Blog this'

Great book on environmental impact of food choices. Many important facts in this book, eg, 45% of earths land mass devoted to live stock...underscoring the magnitude of the current crisis. Dr. Richard Oppenlander’s new book Food Choice and Sustainability: Why Buying Local, Eating Less Meat, and Taking Baby Steps Won’t Work (Langdon Street Press, 2013) is a comprehensive exploration of the profound and far-reaching environmental effects of eating animal products. Extensively researched, tightly reasoned, and very well written, it will likely be the reference work on the environmental effects of animal agriculture for years to come, and it belongs on the bookshelf or e-reader of everyone in the animal rights and environmental movements. Because there are dozens of high-quality books on the ethics and health benefits of veganism, but precious few on its environmental impact. Certain facts in his narrative stand out in particularly stark relief, undercutting such assumptions at the roots.Fact #1: 45 percent of the Earth’s landmass is now devoted to livestock. This astonishing statistic is one among many underscoring the magnitude of the current crisis. Throughout the book, Oppenlander chooses his references carefully and documents their sources so that they can be quoted with confidence. For example, the 45 percent figure is from the International Livestock Research Institute and includes land used for grazing and land on which plants used to feed livestock are grown. While deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels are the chief drivers of global climate change, upon digging deeper it turns out that each of these would be far less damaging if livestock farming operations were eliminated (as Oppenlander consistently proposes) or even substantially decreased (which in itself would mark a major step in the right direction). Deforestation, we learn in this book, does not occur in a vacuum. For centuries, our planet’s forests have been cut down primarily to create more land for grazing cattle. Fact #2: 70 percent of all deforested land in the Amazon has gone toward creating land to raise cattle. Fact #3:Worldwide, 91 percent of all rainforest land deforested since 1970 is now used for grazing livestock, much of it for export from poorer nations to richer ones. The scale of the environmental destruction is almost too large to grasp. And it is still accelerating.

Celebrities Ask Obama Help End Japan Taiji Dolphin Slaughter | Global Animal:

'via Blog this' A handful of American celebrities and animal activists want to use negotiations for a free trade agreement with Japan as a bargaining tool to end the cruel capture and slaughter of dolphins in Japan. In a letter addressed to the U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy, Hip Hop mogul Russel Simmons asked the ambassador to urge President Obama to tie the signing of the Trans-Pacific Partnership to the Taiji dolphin slaughter. Other celebrities behind this latest push include Oscar-winning Sean Penn, Gwyneth Paltrow, Charlize Theron, Ellen DeGeneres, among many others. This year, 250 dolphins were captured, about 80 were killed, and an additional 50 plus were sold off to aquariums and water parks. Our Special today is corn chowder with Agent Orange | Farm Wars:

Remember Agent Orange? The US Army sprayed it all over Vietnam. It defoliated (destroyed) plant growth and brought on cancers and birth defects.
One of its significant ingredients was a chemical called 2.4-D.
Well, the US Dept. of Agriculture has cleared the way for brand new Dow GMO corn and soy crops. They are engineered to withstand spraying with 2,4-D.
The theory is, the corn and soy will survive, but pesky weeds will die.
Of course, the drifting spray of 2,4-D will kill all sorts of other plants, including fruit trees.
And there is that species called Human. Have a little lymphoma with your corn chowder.
Here are several quotes from Senior Scientist, Doug Gurian-Sherman, who writes for the Union of Concerned Scientists at their Equation blog:....click link above

The Harper government of Canada gave the Norwegian salmon feedlot industry the green light to expand in BC. Days later on January 28, 2014, the biggest Norwegian company using British Columbia to grow "salmon" was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. They are talking big expansion, looking for US investors. Each fish farm is now issued a federal licence giving the companies the power to use fish infected with salmon viruses in their farms. Alexandra Morton is in court fighting this. This is a death sentence to the wild salmon of British Columbia.

Each salmon farm also needs a provincial licence - a rental agreement for the seafloor below the floating farm. Alexandra needs your help to send a clear message to the Premier of British Columbia - do not rent the seafloor to the salmon farming industry. See his blog for details http://alexandramorton.typepad.com Please share this petition with your friends and family - for the wild salmon. Thank you
